Vistas y Miradores = Lookout Points

Blog Followers:  My apologies for not posting more but I have been busy with my classes, showing our new housemate, Donna (from Austin, TX) around Guanajuato , attending Zumba classes (trying to live healthier and make healthy changes here) and more.  Unbelievably enough a distant cousin of mine who also teaches Spanish around Chicago ran into me here, so we've been catching up with one another.  This weekend I will be traveling to a few neighboring towns: San Miguel de Allende, Dolores Hidalgo, and Atotonilco on an 8 hour bus trip with stops in each town.  I look forward to sharing pictures of these locales in additon to Guanajuato.

I hope everyone isn't getting tired of my food posts but here are some more with some pictures of sites to follow on the next blog entry.  Everything is just so good and colorful!

La cena: Bistec o carne asada,

arroz méxicano, y pepinos y tomates/jitomates

- How yummy/delicious!

(This is the popular saying in México)

La Cena:  Pechuga Rellena con Espagueti y Verduras

The spaghetti is made with cream & ground red pepper in a blender and the chicken according to my host, Marta is like eating Mexican Sushi because it has cheese, ham, and spinach wrapped around chicken with a light breading on the outside.

¡Me encanta esta cena!

Las Paletas de Mavidiscos = Marshmallow Lollipops

These were made by Ebert, he is Marta's nephew and handyman around her house.  He brought these buy to show Marta and I thought they were great.

They cost $30-Pesos or about $3.00-Dollars USA

Comida China en México - Chinese Food in Mexico

Pozole:  A Traditional & Popular Dish in Mexico

Contains:  Corn which has been boiled in seasonings for a couple hours prior to preparing the whole dish, marinated chicken, and chiles poblanos.  Just prior to serving freshly cut lettuce, radishes, and spoon fulls of avocado are added which add texture and a freshness to this dish.

It too was tasty and has a unique original flavor.  I didn't realize how much I was tired of eating the same old things at home until I came here.  I will be preparing some of these dishes at home for sure!!!

Comida :) MMMmmmm......

Helado con Galletas = Ice Cream with cookie (pieces)

This is why we and/or I are overweight in the US, because this is a small ice cream in México and large is 2-3 of these.  I think it cost me about $1-$1.50. They had all kinds of fruit flavors too such as mango, strawberry, pinapple and more.  I was good and bought a small vanilla with chocolate cookies, but I eat lots of fruits during the day here so I ordered this one.

¡La cena el 8 de junio fue deiciosa!:

The juice I'm drinking is agua de melón and is basically cantalope & water.

The white pasta is like a cold summer pasta salad with ham, yellow-sweet pepper, and corn.

The chicken has a tomato base sauce and it was good.  Hard tortilla shells accompany lots of meals and are used like we use bread sometimes to push food onto your utensils.

Sopa - Soup: Often served as a first course to our meals.

La Cocina = The Kitchen

El Comedor = The Dining Room

La Sala = The Living Room

This is the view out the back window without the zoom on the camera so you can see the fancy restaurant on the peak in the background to give you perspective.

It's hard to tell but there are Quaker type of Oats as the cereal and this did not come out of a box folks and was great.  Maybe we should make our own cereal mixes!

This is a paper goods store, "papelería".
The stores are all very small like this and they are everywhere throughout the city.
I will post more in the days to come.

The family I am living with does not eat all-natural items, but you would think they do because Marta is concientious about always having fresh of everything and nothing comes in packets or boxes.  The plant you see is called Jaicama, not like the country and it is native to Africa.  The flower petals can be soaked in water and it creates a homemade KoolAid and it make it a little sweeter one adds sugar/azucar.  It was delicious and nutricious.

  • Arrived in Guanjuato & waited in lots of lines today
  • I ate an expensive salad at the Houston Airport, but it was tasty!

(I have decided I am not translating everything so you've got to do some working and studying on your own, but I'll sum up the highlights in English.)

  • I met a young man traveling from Charleston, West Virginia and he is going to be studying at the University of Guanajuato to prepare for a semester study-abroad trip this fall in Murcia, Spain.  He's majoring in International Business with a minor in Spanish.
  • I did not get a picture of him as I was afraid he would be offended.

Waiting/Esperando to check-in at O'Hare for 1 hr 20 min's.

Al aeropuerto de O'Hare

¡Mi ensalada cara, cuesta $15.08!

Arrival Area - Immigration & Customs behind the glassed-in area.

Mexican Immigration - Visting forms.
I had to show with my passport to enter Mexico & they stamped it!

Customs Area - La sala de Aduana

Customs Form - I had to declare what items I was carrying into the country.
Mainly that I wasn't carrying $10,000 or more dollars, that I was traveling with a laptop and that I'd be visiting for 38 days, which for some reasons sounds shorter than 5 weeks.

I was in the customs area in the Mexican airport for at least 45 minutes in line.
One of the kids was whining in Spanish that we had been waiting forever and if we were ever going to get out of line.  Another boy kept asking his mother if we were really in Mexico.  He saw his father a few minutes later and it was a joy to see him so excited to see his Dad.
